Simpleton

The Red Masquers are performing George Bernard Shaw's Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles as part of the 2009 Darwin Days at Duquesne University. They were originally asked to produce Inherit the Wind, about the Scopes monkey trials, but opted instead for Simpleton in order to explore and present a lesser-known and arguably more interesting play.

The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles
has Shaw exploring themes of eugenics, religion, and useful productivity in a modern society. The play follows the lives of several British subjects who, together with the local natives, strive to build a perfect society on a island paradise. Shaw lampoons just about every social convention from marriage to vegetarianism to war — with the Rapture thrown in for good measure! Simpleton will bring to life the influence of Darwin in a humorous and dramatic fashion.

The play will be presented in Peter Mills Theater, opening on February 12, 2009, Darwin's 200th birthday, and closing on February 21st. All shows start at 8pm. Tickets are FREE with a Duquesne ID. Outside students are $4 and adults are $6. Peter Mills Theater is located on the ground floor of Rockwell Hall.
